Maldives authorities confirmed to the JMH Consortium that the five Italian divers who died during a dive in the Vaavu Atoll are: Monica Montefalcone, 51, a marine biologist, television presenter, and professor at the University of Genoa; her daughter, Giorgia Sommacal, 20; Muriel Oddenino, also a professor at the University of Genoa; Gianluca Benedetti, a diving instructor and boat captain; and Federico Gualtieri, a student.
How did the tragedy occur?
The group had boarded the Duke of York yacht, a liveaboard vessel designed for tourists specializing in diving. The disappearance occurred near Alimatha, an area known for its caverns and steep drop-offs. After the alert, the Coast Guard deployed fast boats and aircraft to begin the search.
One of the bodies was found inside a cave at a depth of approximately 60 meters. Authorities believe the other four are in the same cavity, suggesting a simultaneous incident that prevented any of them from returning to the surface.
What are the hypotheses surrounding the tragedy?
The hypotheses being considered by authorities are as follows:
Disorientation: The group may have entered a cavern and, instead of finding the exit, ventured deeper and deeper.
Panic: Because the exit was nowhere to be seen, panic erupted within seconds.
Gas mixture: An accident involving the divers' oxygen cylinders is not being ruled out.
Oxygen toxicity: In a moment of panic, the body demands a large amount of air to breathe, a phenomenon known as hyperventilation. Doing so with oxygen pumped from cylinders at a depth of approximately 60 meters can trigger collapse. Maldivian police told the JMH International Consortium of Journalists, present at the scene, that they are pursuing several lines of investigation. One suggests that bad weather reduced visibility inside the cave, causing the group to become disoriented and run out of air while trying to find their way out. According to Italian media, the fact that none of them managed to ascend reinforces this possibility.

La policía de Maldivas manifestestó al Consorcio Internacional de Periodistas JMH, presente en el lugar, que mantiene abiertas varias líneas de investigación. Una de ellas apunta a que el mal tiempo redujo la visibilidad dentro de la cueva, provocando que el grupo se desorientara y agotara el aire mientras intentaba encontrar la salida. Según medios italianos, el hecho de que ninguno lograra ascender refuerza esta posibilidad.
