La Organización Mundial de la Salud identificó al paciente cero del mortal brote de hantavirus en el crucero MV Hondius. Se trata de Leo Schilperoord, un ornitólogo de origen neerlandés que viajaba junto a su esposa, Mirjam Schilperoord-Huisman.
The World Health Organization has identified patient zero of the deadly hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship. He was Leo Schilperoord, a Dutch ornithologist who was traveling with his wife, Mirjam Schilperoord-Huisman.
Leo Schilperoord, de 69 años y natural de Haulerwijk, comenzó a mostrar síntomas compatibles con el hantavirus poco después de zarpar desde Ushuaia el pasado 1 de abril. Los primeros indicios de malestar en Schilperoord incluyeron fiebre, cefalea y trastornos gastrointestinales, síntomas habituales en los estadios iniciales de la infección.
El cuadro se agravó. El 11 de abril Schilperoord padeció graves problemas respiratorios y falleció ese mismo día a bordo, sin que se confirmara el diagnóstico mediante pruebas de laboratorio. El cuerpo permaneció en el barco durante casi dos semanas, hasta su desembarco autorizado el 24 de abril en la isla británica de Santa Elena, situada en pleno Atlántico Sur. Mirjam, esposa de Schilperoord, murió poco después.

The World Health Organization has identified patient zero of the deadly hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship. He was Leo Schilperoord, a Dutch ornithologist who was traveling with his wife, Mirjam Schilperoord-Huisman.
Leo Schilperoord, 69, from Haulerwijk, began showing symptoms consistent with hantavirus shortly after departing from Ushuaia on April 1. Schilperoord's initial symptoms included fever, headache, and gastrointestinal issues, common in the early stages of the infection.
His condition worsened. On April 11, Schilperoord suffered severe respiratory problems and died that same day on board, before the diagnosis could be confirmed by laboratory tests. The body remained on the ship for almost two weeks, until its authorized disembarkation on April 24 on the British island of Saint Helena, located in the South Atlantic. Mirjam, Schilperoord's wife, died shortly afterward.

Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) hat den ersten Patienten des tödlichen Hantavirus-Ausbruchs auf dem Kreuzfahrtschiff MV Hondius identifiziert. Es handelte sich um den niederländischen Ornithologen Leo Schilperoord, der mit seiner Frau Mirjam Schilperoord-Huisman reiste.
Der 69-jährige Leo Schilperoord aus Haulerwijk zeigte kurz nach seiner Abfahrt von Ushuaia am 1. April Symptome, die auf eine Hantavirus-Infektion hindeuteten. Zu seinen ersten Symptomen zählten Fieber, Kopfschmerzen und Magen-Darm-Beschwerden – typische Symptome im Frühstadium der Infektion.
Sein Zustand verschlechterte sich. Am 11. April erlitt Schilperoord schwere Atemprobleme und starb noch am selben Tag an Bord, ohne dass die Diagnose labortechnisch bestätigt werden konnte. Sein Leichnam blieb fast zwei Wochen auf dem Schiff, bis es am 24. April auf der britischen Insel St. Helena im Südatlantik von Bord gebracht wurde. Schilperoords Ehefrau Mirjam starb kurz darauf.
